Lab Seven was to layer color with only four choices. The reference image is a monkey face and we pre-selected kid markers and one pastel each. I was lucky to have pastels on hand – they were from college in the late 80s and still work!
The boys began to groan a bit after the first strokes of their markers. They had seen the drawings in the book and were already putting themselves down about their efforts. One of my main goals is to make them confident in what they draw, and with a little encouragement, they enjoyed the lab and liked the finished drawings. I did too.
We should get some proper art/drawing tools, if we’re to continue with these labs (or at least I should.) Using the kid markers, as compared with the pastel, felt much different both in my hand and how my brain used them. It shows in my drawing.
The order below is the reference shot, Abe’s drawing, Eli’s, then mine.

My friend, Angie, is having a link-up for the book, Drawing Lab on her blog. She’s going to attempt weekly labs with the three generations of her family and is inviting anyone else to draw along. Stop by to post your link with her lab or just take a look at all the participant’s drawings.

These are excellent! I really love Abe’s. He captured the monkey’s expression perfectly plus his bold style draws me in.
I too, am using ancient pastels. They are old because I never use them. Not my thing. I’m enjoying learning about new art supplies. My favorite are the Copic markers and an ultra fine black Sharpie. I have some recommendations before you buy any Copics. You could get started with 2 or three. There’s no need to buy a set!

Eli’s is adorable. I love the ears.
