Drawing Lab :: Eight

Drawing LabLab Eight was to let random paint marks “tell” you what to draw. By using red, yellow and blue watercolors in random strokes, you would find a drawing and literally draw it out with your pen.

The boys loved this exercise. We did the watercolor strokes just before bed one night and made our drawings in the morning before school. We used a couple watercolor sets we had on hand, thick cardstock and regular black gel pens.

Eli jumped right into the drawing, seeing a pig and a helicopter immediately in one of his watercolored papers. Abe took the longest to start drawing, saying “I don’t see anything!” I pointed out one shape that could have been something and that was all the encouragement it took to make him “see”. We only had time to do line drawings and not really finish our work, but I think we got the point of the exercise.

The order below is Abe’s full set and my favorite (his cat), Eli’s full set and my favorite (pig and helicopter), then my set and favorite (sneaky dinosaur).

My friend, Angie, is having a link-up for the book, Drawing Lab on her blog. She’s going to attempt weekly labs with the three generations of her family and is inviting anyone else to draw along. Stop by to post your link with her lab or just take a look at all the participant’s drawings.

  1. I love them all! You guys did great. I think the line drawings have a much bigger impact than if they had more detail. The sneaky dinosaur is absolutely perfect as it is!

  2. Who is the big lug of of a creature? I want to meet him. So much of his character comes out just in that small face.
