Are you squeamish? I’m really not trying to shock you or give you a bug phobia… I have a point to make.
That little critter on the corn shows the natural and organic farming of my CSA. They do not use pesticides, so say hello to my little friend.
You will have some opportunistic creatures looking for a good time on some of your produce when you choose local, organic foods. This little caterpillar looks like he died happy.
As you walk through the grocery store produce section, everything is arranged beautifully. The colors are bright and vibrant, fruits and veggies are gathered in an orderly fashion. It’s truly appealing. But what is in or on those goodies that you can’t see? When you buy that beautiful red apple from Chile what are you really getting for your money?
This here is no preachy blog. There will be no finger pointing and tsk tsk-ing. But I’d love for you to come away from reading this tiny diatribe and think about the food you buy and feed to yourself and your family. If you’ve never thought about buying local, check out LocalHarvest.org. You can find information about CSAs, Farmer’s Markets and Co-ops. It’s not only fruits and vegetables, you can seek out grass-fed beef and cage-free chickens, honey, dairy, eggs, the list is endless.
You can be your own farm-aid.
p.s. That ear of corn up there was THE best of the season so far.
