OM :: The Dog

om [one moment] meet upOM is *one moment* and is a new meetup designed to notice & relish a moment in everyday life. The meetup idea was created by Linda at her blog, a la mode stuff.

If you’d like to participate in OM, just click the button and you’ll be taken to Linda’s post explaining it all. After you read this post, of course 😉

My moment this week was a glimpse of reality. This sweet girl, whom I’ve based my business around and who is part of the heart of our family, is getting old. The kind of old where you look at the numbers of a life span and she is at the far end.

My girl, Scout, will be 9-years-old this August. We’ve had her with us since she was just weeks old. Other than the gray hair on her chin and sleeping more than she used to, I don’t really think about her getting older. But this past week there was a palpable moment of knowing. Knowing that this dog will not live forever. And it breaks my heart a little just in the “knowing.”

But we don’t live life that way. That knowing moment should clarify the living part of life and help us celebrate every moment we can. That’s how Scout lives life and how I aspire to.

  1. Scout is beautiful! You sum it up in your last sentence. Thinking about the inevitible should prompt us to appreciate the now! Dogs are such great friends and companions. I’m just learning that from our pup.

    BTW, I just saw your tweet from a way back about the Prov. kid’s events. I’ll try to get that info out sooner next time. You may want to subscribe to http://www.kidoinfo.com. Anisa (@kidoinfo) has a great local parenting site. You are considered local ;}

    • Living these moments and not just waiting for the next… that is what’s so great about this meetup of One Moment. Living now and appreciating later.

      Thanks for the link! With summer coming up, we’ll keep an eye out for kid events in the area 🙂

  2. Lately I’ve had moments of “knowing” with Beans. While I’ve had some tearful moments, that knowing makes me treasure him even more. Here’s to little (and not so little) brown dogs and joy they bring our families!

    • I was a bit tearful writing this post. I snapped out of it and gave her ears a scratch.

      Here, here to brown dogs everywhere!

  3. The pain of the loss of a beloved canine companion is only outweighed by the joy of having them in our lives. The loss of Kipper over 2 and a half years ago still makes me cry…but the joy of our 2 year old Stirling is something truly awesome.
