Old Dogs, New Licks

Scout the DogIt’s been awhile since I’ve written about Scout. She is coming up on her 13th birthday this year. We are not planning a Bark Mitzvah (hey, but if you are, no judgment, you weird and wonderful people.)

Her birthday will make her about 91 years old in human years, if I’ve done the math correctly. Having a senior dog is a joy. The understanding between Scout and the members of our family is easy-breezy. Most days have a similar routine, which include a walk, lots of naps, lots of human contact and lots of naps (did I say that already?)

In this epic winter we’re having, our walks can be too short, too icy or non-existent. Even the river, which can be a go-to winter swim with her Chessie blood, is frozen on the banks. Little or no exercise has led to OCD. That’s right. I looked it up on the internet, so it must be correct.

Without getting too technical, Scout licks herself, the furniture, the carpets, even the floor, when she doesn’t get enough exercise. (That wasn’t technical at all, just logical.) The solution, of course, is to take her on at least one 30-minute walk a day. I believe this not only exercises her body, but her brain, as well. All that doggie data from the smells and sensations of being somewhere, other than home, seems to calm her in a way nothing else does. And when the licking begins, we need to redirect her attention to something else. This can be comical, as Scout is now quite deaf. This is especially true in the middle of the night, when all you hear is licking, then high pitched whistling, finger snapping and hand clapping (the only things she can truly hear now.)

Someone just got licked!
Someone just got licked!

Disturbed sleep and obsessive licking aside, we treasure (almost) every moment (ie: Scout the Garbage-Destroyer) with our old girl.

No one in our family makes us laugh more. She’s never grumpy. She’s always patient. And she’s the quietest one in our house. Cheers to you, old lady, Scout! And many more healthy years to come.

The Art of Cone

It’s been quite a week for Scout. Our girl had to have a cyst removed from her eyelid, which required general anaestetic and a whole day at the vet. Scout has never had to wear a cone before and it has been a pain in the arse for all involved. I feel badly for her… Continue Reading

Let Us Play

Hey there! See that toy on the ground? Do you? ‘Cause I don’t think you see it. If you SAW it, you would PICK it UP and throw it, yes? What’s more important right now? That’s right… nothing is. Let Us Play. Continue Reading

Stare Down

It may look like I’m waiting for the ball to say something, but balls don’t talk, silly. It’s a stare down, between me and the ball. One of us is going to move and I’d bet my silky ears, it’s going to be the ball. Continue Reading

I See You

I’ve realized that I can’t see very well any more. I lose sight of the ball sometimes. I need the light to go up and down the stairs. I bark at sounds instead of sights now. But it’s okay. I see you. Continue Reading

Old Lady

I run with A-Dog a few times during the week. I can hardly stay inside my skin when I know she’s getting ready for a run and I might be going too. She used to take me every time, but as I grow older, I’m not allowed to go every day. Recently, my body started… Continue Reading

Dude, Where’s My Girl?

Okay, I’ll admit that I can be neurotic. I like routine, crave it actually. so, when a constant in my life gets gone, I worry. A-Dog took a short trip away with her girls this past weekend. I’m her girl and why I wasn’t invited is still a sore point… Anyway, I’ve gotten used to… Continue Reading
