I take frequent walks on wooded trails with my dog, Scout. These trails are on protected land not far from my neighborhood. But they are nestled into other recently developed neighborhoods that we’ve dubbed the McMansions. Not an original name, but we know that it means a huge house that takes up most of its acreage with landscaped grounds.
As I walk the trails, amongst the sounds of birds and bugs, squirrels and chipmunks, I can hear the hum and buzz of landscaping equipment. It’s such a frequent sound, I almost don’t notice it any more. But I did take my moment this week and listen to those sounds. I visualized all the manicured lawns, one after the other, where the labor relies on someone else. I don’t begrudge anyone hiring help to make their property look its best, but I don’t understand the perfection of it. I guess I look for personality in someone’s home and I really can’t tell one from the other.
I had picked some strawberries from our patch that morning. I planted the patch about four years ago and last fall was the first real crop we had enjoyed. And apparently, these are plants that bear fruit in both spring and fall (who knew?), so we’ve been enjoying homegrown, organic strawberries for a week or so.
I’m proud of my little strawberry patch in all its wild and uneven and slightly overgrown existence. My hands helped make that patch and I look on it as truly beautiful.
OM is *one moment* and is a meetup designed to notice & relish a moment in everyday life. The meetup idea was created by Linda at her blog, a la mode stuff. If you’d like to participate in OM, just click the button and you’ll be taken to Linda’s post explaining it all.

Ahh, the taste of fresh strawberries from your own strawberry patch! Far more valuable than super fancy anything. 🙂

I am so jealous! I’d love to grow strawberries and haven’t had success yet. Yum!!
I feel like no one can escape the sounds of modern civilization any more. It seems there are always sounds of car horns, engines buzzing, sirens sounding. While at Lake Tahoe, we could hear the waves crashing and the wind blowing in the trees. Can’t tell you how many times we said we loved those sounds while we were there.
My hubby takes great pride in doing the lawn himself, unlike what seems like 80% of the folks in our city. Well, actually, now that Liam is 13, hubby has help from him! Anyway, I totally agree that the less than perfect gardens we tend ourselves are more beautiful!
