I think I’m going to run a 5K in less than 3 weeks.
“I think” because of a few reasons:
a) I haven’t been training to race
b) I’m the slowest runner in creation and will most surely come in last
c) I need to break in my new shoes
Okay, that last reason is stupid, but I needed a “c” on the list. The “a” and the “b” are big enough. I ran a half marathon in 2001 (just typing that makes me giggle) and I started training in January for an October race. I need more time! Granted that was 13 miles and this is 3, but I need more time!
I have accepted my fate as the slowest runner evah. I really don’t run, I jog, but that sounds soooo 1970s. I can’t run with anyone else (except my dog) because my pace is just unbearable for others, even the elderly. In a racing situation, when you come in last, you get the sympathy clapping and cheering when you finish. “Good for you, sweetie!” “Awww, look at her… she did it! Her face is awfully red, isn’t it?”
People may think I exaggerate the slowness of my pace, but in that half marathon, the pace car had to keep revving it’s engine so it wouldn’t stall as it trailed me. Good times.
I don’t live my life as a pity party, so yup, I’ll run it. And when I cross that finish line last, I’ll cross it with humility and with my sense of self and humor in tact.

Please excuse me for laughing at the pace car sentence 😉 Dude, you’re JOGGING, which is getting your heart rate up and doing all that good stuff that CV work does – who the heck cares how fast/slow you are? Well, obviously the concept of “race” was invented by people that care, but really – just doing it is way more important – IMHO (sitting here on my fat a$$ – believe me, if we were to go jogging I would be far behind!)
