Best of OM :: The Dog

I’m off with my family on a winter break for a week, but thought it would be a good idea to showcase the best of my OM [one moment] posts.

OM is a meetup every Friday to reflect on one moment that is meaningful to you. The moments the participants have shared are funny, poignant, silly, deep… a whole range of experiences and emotions that really showcase how much common ground we share. I urge you to join this meetup, created by the simply awesome, Linda of a la mode. I look forward to the writing and reading of moments every week and I hope you will too.

My moment this week was a glimpse of reality. This sweet girl, whom I’ve based my business around and who is part of the heart of our family, is getting old. The kind of old where you look at the numbers of a life span and she is at the far end.

My girl, Scout, will be 9-years-old this August. We’ve had her with us since she was just weeks old. Other than the gray hair on her chin and sleeping more than she used to, I don’t really think about her getting older. But this past week there was a palpable moment of knowing. Knowing that this dog will not live forever. And it breaks my heart a little just in the “knowing.”

But we don’t live life that way. That knowing moment should clarify the living part of life and help us celebrate every moment we can. That’s how Scout lives life and how I aspire to.
