He has to get his fix at least once a day or he gets kinda grumpy about missing it. I admire his dedication and enthusiasm to his art and hope he keeps it for a lifetime.

I’ve discovered that in making most of my designs, I use my computer for “drawing” and creating. Whether it’s a pen+tablet or using software, it sometimes seems like I’m holding something between me and the design.

One of my more recent Party Invitations, requested by someone, was for a zoo theme. I felt a bit out of my own comfort zone, but took inspiration from one of my boys’ favorite books, Goodnight Gorilla by Peggy Rathman. I love how the illustrations speak more than the words and our family has always enjoyed looking for that tiny red balloon that’s drawn on every page.

Based on Ms. Rathman’s adorable animals, I took out pen and paper and paid my homage. I scanned my finished doodles, colored them and created a design where they could live. It felt great to hold a pen and draw on paper. I’ll have to join my son more often in his daily sessions. He’s a smart boy.

The Zoo Party Invitation Design

My six-year-old son loves to draw.
