It was one of those mistakes that make you stop dead in your tracks and rethink quite a few things you thought you had under control. I’m writing about it here because it’s important to not let it slide by even if it seems to resolved.

Some details…
Business-wise, I’ve been scrambling lately to make this card business I run more successful. My husband and I have put my full-time dedication to it under a time limit and that time is running out. As the deadline has gotten closer, I’ve felt much more stress, and yes, even desperation, than the pleasure and fun I used to have in the day-to-day. Not a good way to work and makes the environment just ripe for a big eff-up.

Making a long story short, I completely rushed a new design into my Etsy shop without giving it the proper time to ferment. I’ve found that when designing, you really can’t rush anything to the public. It usually needs some time to be edited and tweaked, so that it represents you, makes sense with your style and holds up with its quality. The design I rushed into the shop was almost an exact replica of another design by someone else. Mind-boggling and mortifying!

Needless to say, when I realized my complete idiocy, the design was taken down. I apologized and the other designer graciously says she will not harbor any hard feelings. We’ve known each other for at least a couple years, so I think that may have helped. People that know me well would say that honesty and integrity are very important to me and I try to instill those values in everything I do.

The big question is What have I learned? I have given this mistake so much thought, that it’s taken me to a very deep place in how I want to move forward with this life career. Firstly, I need to find that joy again and not let even a smidgen of fear and desperation in. I need to focus on taking time and care with what I’m creating and make sure that it’s my vision. And the direction I am heading in needs to be my own. I’ve always followed my own path and I think I’ve lost my way a bit by becoming overwhelmed with making this business work for me and my family.

Wishing I could take back my hasty actions doesn’t accomplish anything. Honestly admitting my mistake, sincerely apologizing to those I’ve offended and hurt and learning something valuable from it is the only way I can move on. I’d love to hear your stories and comments when it comes to a mistake that has rocked you to the core.

I made one, and yeah, it was a doozy!
