\nThese two lovely ladies will be stopping by once a month to argue <\/del>share their points of view on different pet-related topics. I’m so happy they are here.

\nBunny and I have been asked to share our opinions on different things once a month, so I thought I\u2019d share a conversation that we had recently and see if it helps any of you think differently. For those who don\u2019t know who we are, Bunny is a Greyhound who shares her life and adventures with me, my husband, two other Greyhounds and a German Shepherd. Also, if you have something you\u2019d like us to discuss, please let us know, as we\u2019re still feeling our way around with this.<\/p>\n

It started the other day when I told Bunny I thought it would be a good idea for her to learn a few tricks that we could do at the nursing home. Bunny has actually been through obedience class and is a pretty smart little cookie, but she is not fond of letting others know that she can be obedient. Still, I thought I\u2019d give it a shot and I mentioned it to her.<\/p>\n

Me:<\/span> Bunny, I was thinking it would be a good idea for you to learn a few tricks.<\/p>\n

Bunny:<\/span> What? Is this a joke?<\/p>\n

Me:<\/span> No, I\u2019m serious! Think about how happy it would make the people at the nursing home.<\/p>\n

Bunny:<\/span> You mean act like a trained monkey \u2013 in public? Tell me you\u2019re kidding!<\/p>\n

Me:<\/span> I\u2019m thinking of your best interests! Studies show that dogs whose brains are stimulated on a daily basis have a less likely chance of developing canine cognitive disorder. You know, like Lilac. (For those who don\u2019t follow our blog, Lilac is our fifteen and a half year old Greyhound. She suffers from this, also known as Alzheimer\u2019s for dogs.)<\/p>\n

Bunny:<\/span> Learning tricks can stop that from happening? She\u2019s nuttier than a fruitcake!<\/p>\n

Me:<\/span> Well, it\u2019s one thing that can help. Plus, it gives us time to work together, just you and me. It\u2019s bonding time.<\/p>\n

Bunny:<\/span> I do like having time with you to myself\u2026<\/p>\n

Me:<\/span> Did I mention that the people at the nursing home and the kids would be really impressed? I bet
\neverybody would want to pet you even more if they saw you do a few tricks.<\/p>\n

Bunny:<\/span> More petting? I might seriously have to consider this!<\/p>\n

Me:<\/span> Does this mean you\u2019ll do it?<\/p>\n

Bunny:<\/span> I\u2019m in! Just don\u2019t go telling everyone that I\u2019m a trained monkey. I have a reputation to protect!<\/p>\n

Hopefully we\u2019ve laid out the benefits of keeping your dog active. Teaching your dog tricks and keeping their mind and body stimulated has a lot of benefits for both of you. There are a lot of ways that you can do those things, though. Teaching your dog tricks is just one of them.
