All is right with the world after some time moving our feet outside. While some enjoy walking the streets (in the dog-sense) we prefer the wooded trails.

I’ve mentioned that A-Dog and I use the trails near our house where it’s accepted to let dogs off leash. Which means, as A-Dog chugs along on her “run”, I can do as I please. This includes smelling and chasing and taking the lead. That last one can drive A-Dog crazy!

I take point on a trail that can only fit one body at a time. I trot, she runs. But there are times when I must slow down if I catch a whiff of something irresistible. I can live with her groans and curses and even her running into my backside (just don’t touch my tail, yo.) So, I inhale what I need and run fast to take point again. This process repeats itself over and over again: run, slow down/stop, body block, cursing, sniff and run.

So, what’s the why? Why do I have to be in front of her? I’m protecting part of my pack. While A-Dog is the boss (for the most part) I feel compelled to protect her in the wide open of nature. While her mind is sharp, her teeth are not, and she couldn’t outrun anything with four legs. So, I’ll take the swearing in stride, when I get in her way. Doggy dam, indeed.

Walking and hiking are a big part of our lives.
