With two boys, seven and four, the moments can happen fast and furious. But the one moment I chose this week to share here is a doozy to me.

My oldest is in 2nd grade. He’s very smart and is fortunate so far to have school work come easily to him. We have not had that academic struggle many families have to conquer. The same cannot be said for the social/emotional part of school.

I think I may have become complacent by thinking how *easy* these kid years were sailing along. I was comparing boys with infants and that is a true apples and oranges kinda deal. I am not an infant lover. I don’t smell that baby smell and swoon. Not that I didn’t enjoy my boys as infants, but I couldn’t wait to have a conversation with them. The kid ages of five and above are more *in my wheelhouse* as the corporate types like to say.

Kindergarten, 1st grade and the first half of 2nd grade had minimal traumas. But this early spring has been difficult. There have been tears and fights and name calling. And this drama has mostly been created by my son. He has been struggling with a bucket of emotion that he’s not equipped to handle and will tip that bucket to a point where it just dumps out and he has to let it go.

My moment is the realization that this mom-thing will only become more challenging: not the constant bone-tired care of a baby, but the complex, thought-provoking guidance on the way to adulthood. Am I ready? I don’t think I’ll ever be ready.

But I am willing.

Happy Mother’s Day!

[95,105
