I’m excited to introduce two of my favorite blog authors, Carrie and Bunny from Tales and Tails, to the dog blog.
These two lovely ladies will be stopping by once a month to argue share their points of view on different pet-related topics. I’m so happy they are here.
Bunny and I have been asked to share our opinions on different things once a month, so I thought I’d share a conversation that we had recently and see if it helps any of you think differently. For those who don’t know who we are, Bunny is a Greyhound who shares her life and adventures with me, my husband, two other Greyhounds and a German Shepherd. Also, if you have something you’d like us to discuss, please let us know, as we’re still feeling our way around with this.
It started the other day when I told Bunny I thought it would be a good idea for her to learn a few tricks that we could do at the nursing home. Bunny has actually been through obedience class and is a pretty smart little cookie, but she is not fond of letting others know that she can be obedient. Still, I thought I’d give it a shot and I mentioned it to her.
Me: Bunny, I was thinking it would be a good idea for you to learn a few tricks.
Bunny: What? Is this a joke?
Me: No, I’m serious! Think about how happy it would make the people at the nursing home.
Bunny: You mean act like a trained monkey – in public? Tell me you’re kidding!
Me: I’m thinking of your best interests! Studies show that dogs whose brains are stimulated on a daily basis have a less likely chance of developing canine cognitive disorder. You know, like Lilac. (For those who don’t follow our blog, Lilac is our fifteen and a half year old Greyhound. She suffers from this, also known as Alzheimer’s for dogs.)
Bunny: Learning tricks can stop that from happening? She’s nuttier than a fruitcake!
Me: Well, it’s one thing that can help. Plus, it gives us time to work together, just you and me. It’s bonding time.
Bunny: I do like having time with you to myself…
Me: Did I mention that the people at the nursing home and the kids would be really impressed? I bet
everybody would want to pet you even more if they saw you do a few tricks.
Bunny: More petting? I might seriously have to consider this!
Me: Does this mean you’ll do it?
Bunny: I’m in! Just don’t go telling everyone that I’m a trained monkey. I have a reputation to protect!
Hopefully we’ve laid out the benefits of keeping your dog active. Teaching your dog tricks and keeping their mind and body stimulated has a lot of benefits for both of you. There are a lot of ways that you can do those things, though. Teaching your dog tricks is just one of them.
Carrie is a girl living in the midwest with her husband, three Greyhounds and a German Shepherd. Sometimes she shares writing privileges with Bunny, the youngest of the hounds, on Tales and Tails. They write about the adventures, or misadventures, of their daily life.

We visit Bunny every day on her blog. She is quite the girl! I think her mom should learn tricks first, then Bunny can show HER off at the nursing home!

Great to see Carrie and Bunny getting out and about on other blogs. This was a much better Point/Counterpoint than I remember from Sixty Minutes when I was a kid!
